Partly driven by his love of Caruso, ice producer Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald „Fitzcarraldo“ desires to build an opera house in the middle of the Amazonian jungle for Caruso to perform at. He decides that in order to obtain the funds necessary for this venture he will have to enter into the rubber trade. He purchases a large steamship that he calls „Molly Aida", after his lover, the brothel madam Molly, and sets out on a course to investigate the unexplored cayali river system for rubber.
