Warsaw 1977. Tomek, the son of the famous painter Zdzisław Beksiński, moves into his own apartment. His parents live just nearby, in the same block of flats so they’re all in touch. Tomek’s oversensitive and worrying personality makes his mother, Zofia, anxious about him all the time. Zdzisław Beksiński tries to immerse himself in his art totally. After Tomek’s first suicidal attempt Zdzisław and Zofia have to start fighting not only for their son but also for regaining control over their life. When Zdzisław signs a contract with a France-based art-dealer, Piotr Dmochowski, and Tomek starts working at the Polish Radio it seems that the three of them have left all their troubles behind. However, strange events marked by fate are still to come…
“Firstly, I was looking for a great script to have, because I don’t write. I’m just a director. I prefer to have somebody on the other side of the table to talk through the text. I was looking for a script with a lot of things to do in one time. With this project, it has this whole background of Beksiński family, which I call the best-documented family ever because the father started to record them in 1957, so a year before Tomasz was born. The other thing is the plot. It is a strange documentary because we made it as much as a fiction film as it could be."
